 Artist Bio

Stephen Bolton was raised in small town called Prineville OR in 1982. Since a very young age he has been using art as a means to express ideas, concepts and emotions to try to understand the human condition. After Graduating from Pacific North West College of Art in 2006 he spent time working and finding time here and there to dabble in his passion. In 2013 he took a hiatus from focusing on art to run a Hardware Store. In 2021 he is now taking time to reconnect and finish art work and projects that he has started but not finished over the past 7+ years.

Artist Statement

This Website is my attempts at a new beginning. Over the past year or so I keep hearing people say things like the following, "If you are really committed to your passion then do that and do not let anyone tell you differently," or something to that effect. I have spent a lot of my life in trying to go into two opposite direction, trying to fit in and also trying to stand out. This website I hope to be a culmination of me finally committing to my passion and achieving goals that I have been putting off for a while.

The simple phrase dead gods actually comes from an idea that is setup in the fantasy world of dungeons and dragons. Paraphrasing, it's said that as worshippers stop believing in or paying homage to gods, the gods themselves begin to wither and finally die. When a god dies there corporeal body then exists in the astral plane floating for eternity or until their disciple begin reviving their god. Obviously the term I created, "No gods, but dead gods." is my own feelings about belief and how I view this subject. However I also feel that it is quite fitting to think that constructed ideas about what humans do and are ultimately crushed by our inability to recognize our place in the cosmos. My subject matter tends to be focused on coming to grips with my place in the world. The emotions I feel, the inherited contradictions and my need to try to express those feelings. I have always enjoy myths and story telling. My senior thesis was a retelling of Percival trying to restore the wounded king set in the back drop of a post apocalyptic waste land. My influences from pop culture, fantasy, horror, sci-fi and music are all apparent.
